Novel material used to capture carbon

Carbon capture, combined with alternative renewable energy sources, has the potential to change the face of the energy market and ensure a better future for all. This is because carbon capture could mitigate the impact that traditional fossil fuels have on the environment. The concept of carbon capture is not new, as it happens naturally every day in the environment. But a team of researchers, led by the University of Nottingham (UK), has developed a novel porous material that has unique carbon dioxide (CO2) retention properties. This material can be used in the fight to minimise the levels of CO2 entering the atmosphere. The study was funded in part by the COORDSPACE ('Chemistry of coordination space: extraction, storage, activation and catalysis') project, which received a European Research Council (ERC) grant worth EUR 2.5 million under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

The chief feature of this new material is its absorption of CO2, which the researchers say could have an impact on the development of new carbon capture products designed to reduce emissions from fossil fuel processes. This discovery dovetails with ongoing efforts to develop new materials for gas storage.

The head of the research team, Professor Martin Schröder from the University of Nottingham, said: 'The unique defect structure that this new material shows can be correlated directly to its gas absorption properties. Detailed analyses via structure determination and computational modelling have been critical in determining and rationalising the structure and function of this material.' The team's results have been published in the journal Nature Materials.

The interlocked metal organic framework the researchers created is called NOTT-202a. It consists of tetra-carboxylate ligands, a structure made up of a series of molecules or ions bound to a central metal atom filled with indium metal centres. The structure resembles a beehive, as it is arranged in a honeycomb-like pattern, allowing CO2 to be absorbed selectively. While other gases, such as nitrogen, methane and hydrogen, can pass through the structure, CO2 remains trapped in the material's nanopores, even at low temperatures.

The team used state-of-the-art x-ray powder diffraction measurements to gain insight into the unique CO2 capturing properties of the material, as well as advanced computer modelling to probe the material at the Diamond Light Source UK research facility.

Japan: Elektische auto's als noodstroomvoorziening

Toyoto Motors en Mitsubishi Motors gaan wisselrichters inbouwen in een aantal van hun elektrische automodellen. De batterijen van deze auto’s kunnen dan apparaten in huis van stroom voorzien tijdens stroomstoringen.
Na de grote aardbeving en tsunami in Japan in 2011 viel op veel plaatsen de stroom uit. Hybride elektrische auto’s bleken toen een uitkomst als noodstroomvoorziening. Allerlei apparatuur in huis, zoals elektrische rijst- en waterkokers, werd aangesloten op hun batterijen. De automakers Toyota en Mitsubishi hebben nu besloten om een aantal van hun modellen geschikt te maken als noodvoorziening. Daarvoor hebben ze een elektronische schakeling nodig die gelijkstroom in wisselstroom omzet. Deze wisselrichter moet de opgeslagen hoog-voltage gelijkstroom omschakelen naar een laag-voltage wisselstroom.

In Japan is de Toyota Estima HV op het ogenblik de enige auto die met een wisselrichter wordt geleverd. Toyota is nu van plan tegen het einde van het jaar in een aantal modellen de schakeling beschikbaar te hebben. Volgend jaar maart gaat Mitsubishi de wisselrichter in een plug-in hybride SUV model leveren. Door de toegenomen vraag is Toyota Industries Corp. nu van plan de productie van wisselrichters te verhogen.

Ook andere autofabrikanten willen hun modellen geschikt maken als noodstroomvoorziening. Nissan verkoopt al een systeem om stroom van batterijen in elektrische auto over te brengen naar apparaten in huis.

E-learning for automotive industry, Pilot Project looking for partners in the EU

Credal Business Consulting is preparing a project proposal, to be submitted under this call, and they wish to invite your organisation as a partner on our project.

The project proposal is an interesting and innovative one for the industry. This will be based on the development of a training programme on an e-learning platform, specific to the particular needs of Automotive, Transport and Logistics sector.  Credal Business Consulting believe that this approach will ensure sustainability even after closure of the project.  Credal Business Consulting  will be more than happy to discuss this concept with you in the coming days, after you’ve confirmed your interest in participating.

As you are no doubt aware, in general the financial contribution from the European Commission cannot exceed 75% of the total eligible costs. Consequently, the partners on this project will collectively be expected to provide for the remaining 25%. We can of course discuss and agree on your portion of the co-financing arrangements once we’ve agreed on your participation and your organisation’s specific role in the project.

Since the deadline for the submission of applications is 16 August 2012, time is not on anyone’s side and we do need to know whether this a project that would interest you.  We therefore look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
