Aankondiging Cleantech reis naar Silicon Valley van 20 tot en met 26 juni 2009
Van 20 juni tot 26 juni 2009 zal een delegatie naar Palo Alto (Silicon Valley, VS) reizen. Deze missie zal plaatsvinden in het kader van de verdere invulling van de Economic Alliance tussen Enschede en de stad Palo Alto. Ruim 30 vertegenwoordigers van de 4 O’s (ondernemers, onderwijs, onderzoek en overheid) gaan mee om de groeimarkt voor Cleantech te beleven.
Op basis van de contacten uit eerdere missies is gebleken dat er een groot investeringspotentieel is in de VS op het gebied van Cleantech. Daarnaast heeft President Obama aangekondigd zwaar te zullen investeren in schone, duurzame energie en technologie. Oost Nederland is erg sterk in membraantoepassingen voor waterzuivering, biobrandstoffen, sensortechnologie en diagnostiek, duurzaam bouwen, watermanagement en slimme materialen voor solar toepassingen. Kortom, een uitgelezen kans om uw kansen te verkennen en in contact te komen met voor u relevante bedrijven en organisaties.
Een aantal bedrijven en kennisinstellingen - in de sectoren water- en membraantechnologie, bio-energie en duurzame energie- heeft reeds aangegeven concrete belangstelling voor deze reis te hebben. Daarnaast zullen ook bestuurders uit de regio Twente meegaan. Door de diverse samenstelling van het gezelschap kunnen we Oost Nederland internationaal sterker positioneren als een Cleantech regio. Wij nodigen u van harte uit om mee te gaan naar Silicon Valley.
Het programma voorziet in een reis van totaal 7 dagen. Dit programma zal afgestemd worden op de specifieke interesses van de deelnemers. Beoogd wordt zoveel mogelijk gezamenlijk op te treden. Daarnaast zullen een aantal parallele programma’s georganiseerd worden voor de verdere verdieping op bepaalde onderwerpen.
De kosten van deelname aan de gehele reis bedragen ca. 3.500,- euro. Deze zijn inclusief alle reis- en verblijfkosten, georganiseerde maaltijden en het gezamenlijk programma.
Om deze reis zo succesvol mogelijk te maken willen we zo vroeg mogelijk starten met de voorbereiding. We vragen u dan ook voor 16 april aan ons kenbaar te maken of u belangstelling heeft uw kansen in Silicon Valley te onderzoeken.

Cleantech is frequently named “the Next Wave of Innovation”. It is a new technology and related business models offering competitive returns for investors and customers while providing solutions for global challenges.
Cleantech is a very broad concept. It does not embrace one technology neither does it embrace one industrial sector. Cleantech spans many industry verticals and is defined by the many different segments. Cleantech is growing fast. In 2007, venture capitalists invested $ 2.2 billion into U.S. cleantech companies with a growth rate of 45% (PWC Age, 2008). Revenue growth in the sector is up to 40% in clean energy.
Palo Alto (located in Silicon Valley, USA) and Enschede (located in Twente, NL) are sister-cities. Another relation is that they are both knowledge-intensive region, strong in cleantech and interested in co-operating while riding this next wave of innovation. Hence, this research is done to provide insight in potential economical cooperation regarding cleantech innovation between Enschede and Palo Alto (high-tech hubs for the Netherlands –Silicon Valley). The city of Enschede sponsored this research that describes the findings of an initial market scan to provide a first impression about potential projects. A more indebt research regarding the needs/challenges in and surrounding Palo Alto is recommended as well as opportunities for collaboration in a wider area than solely Twente, as for example the East of the Netherlands and abroad.
By comparing cleantech strengths in Twente and in Silicon Valley several opportunities & potential matches for collaborative projects between Enschede-Palo Alto are identified.
A central finding was that the region Twente is very strong in (i) membrane applications for purification of water, biofuels, gasses, energy conversion etc; (ii) sensor en diagnostics; (iii) sustainable building; (iv) environmental research (in particular management of water)and new materials for solar applications. (other research focused on cleantech is described in this report)
Another central finding was that Silicon Valley forms a strong broad cleantech cluster. Strong cleantech sub-clusters can be considered (i) Water management and purification; (ii) sustainable transportation (mobility); (iii) solar energy and; (iv) biofuels.
Opportunities & potential matches
- New materials (for example for solar applications), lab-on-a-chip, biosensors, biofuels, membranes, (bio)coatings.
- Novel membrames is a main strength in Twente and can be used for purification of water, bio fuels, energy conversion and more.
- Fluidics, Super –conduction for energy savings and heat-exchange systems
- Cleantech application for Micro-reactors
- New materials for solar energy
- Water (risk) management & research (example ITC,CSTM,IMPACT)
- Need for accurate life-cycle analysis in order to understand economic/environmental impact of new technologies [Clean Energy Trends 2008].
- Importance of venture capitalists as investors in CleanTech: The CleanTech sector in Europe is still immature and is yet to see the emergence of substantial specialist investors. Hence, co-operation with VCs in Silicon Valley can be valuable.
